August 19th - 23rd

We've had a few new tastes this week.

We bought some bread from Sweet Water Baking Company bread at the Blacksburg Farmers Market.
  1. Sweet Water Baking Co. - Rocky Knob Walnut Raisin Bread:  This is a rustic-style bread with a chewy crust, naturally leavened, and filled with chunks of walnut and raisins.  It toasts up very nicely and is amazing with a bit of butter and some OJ for breakfast.
On Monday night, Megan had a late meeting on campus so we went to Sharkey's for a quick snack. They had a number of new beers on tap so we got a flight and then shared one pint.
  1. Southern Tier - Creme Brulee Stout
  2. Old Dominion Brewing - Double D IPA- double IPA
  3. Ommegang Brewing - Scythe and Sickle
  4. New Belgium Brewing - Lips of Faith - Heavenly Feijoa
  5. Clown Shoes - Brown Angel
Our absolute favorite was the Creme Brulee Stout.  It's super rich and delicious and literally smells just like crème brûlée.  It tastes like a chocolate crème brûlée, with hints of coffee.  Megan says it tastes like you are having coffee while you are eating dessert.  It's very rich - we would suggest sharing a bottle after dinner on a cool fall or cold winter evening.

School is about to start, so the university has had its normal slate of meetings this week.  Brett went to convocation after which there was a small reception with small appetizers.
  1. Pita square with bleu cheese and quince - the bleu cheese didn't taste at all like bleu cheese and the appetizer pretty much tasted like salt, salt, and super dry pita.
  2. French bread piece with bleu cheese and fig - this was the same "bleu" cheese, but this was slightly better than the other because the sweetness of the fig balanced the salt.  That's the absolute best that can be said about it.
Friday we had to run some errands over in Christiansburg so we went to the Friday beer tasting at Vintage Cellar.  They also had some closeout wines available to taste so we got some extra tastings.
  1. DC Brau - The Citizen:  This is an unusual beer.  They use English hops and a Belgian yeast in a light belgian-style ale.  I wouldn't say this is a saison as it's not spicy enough, but it is quite refreshing and would make an excellent counter to spicy asian foods.
We'll have more tastes from the weekend posted probably on Sunday evening!   Thanks for reading!
